Cassandra Marcussen, a senior at Greenwich High School (GHS), is the co-founder and co-president of the Girls Who Code club at GHS. Last year, Cassandra led the club in making Under My Wing, a safety app aimed at empowering women and preventing sexual assault. As team leader, Cassandra significantly contributed to creating and promoting the app which won Best in Nation in the Verizon App Challenge and $20k for development of the app. The team presented Under My Wing at the 2017 Technology Student Association Conference in Orlando. Additionally, Cassandra was awarded the Acorda Scientific Excellence Award for her work on Under My Wing.
Cassandra is the co-founder and co-president of the Greenwich Programming Outreach Initiative, which teaches coding at local elementary schools. She is passionate about teaching computer coding to youngsters and hopes to help empower the next generation of computer programmers.
Cassandra is also active in the local music community. She is the co-principal cellist of the Norwalk Youth Symphony Principal Orchestra, principal cellist of the GHS String Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra and founding member of the GHS String Quartet. She also enjoys mentoring younger cellists. While Cassandra plans a career in science, she hopes to continue playing music throughout her life.
