  • One in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime
  • Eighty-five percent of domestic violence victims are women
  • Young women aged 16-24 have the highest incidence of domestic violence
  • One in three American children has witnessed violence between parents
  • Approximately half of families that experience partner violence also report child abuse
  • Intimate partner violence accounts for 15% of all violent crime in the United States
  • More women are treated in emergency rooms for battering injuries than for muggings, rapes and traffic accidents combined
  • Most cases of domestic violence are never reported to the police

  • In 2014, 46,750 individuals were served by domestic violence aencies throughout the state
  • In 2014, there were 39,373 criminal court cases for domestic violence in Connecticut - one-third of all criminal cases in the state
  • Four to eight percent of pregnant women in Connecticut are abused
  • The leading cause of death for pregnant or recently pregnant women in Connecticut is domestic violence
  • Twenty-two to twenty-nine percent of pregnant teens are abused
  • According to a survey of Connecticut high school students by the Connecticut Department of Public Health:

              >  One in six reported emotional dating violence incidents
              >  One in twelve reported physical dating violence incidents
              >  An average of 25 homicides are attributed to Intimate Partner Violence each year


Last year, Domestic Abuse Services of YWCA Greenwich:

  • Provided counseling safety planning, crisis intervention and advocacy to 3,398 individuals including 725 children
  • Answered an average of 16-21 hotline calls per day
  • Sheltered 123 individuals
  • Assisted 672 victims in Stamford Superior Court through our Family Violence Victim Advocate program

Last year, Greenwich Police Department:

  • Responded to 232 domestic violence incidents resulting in 107 arrests
  • Two hundred and thirty-two documented incidents               
  • Domestic violence is the second most investigated crime in Greenwich, and the #1 violent crime investigated by Greenwich Police Department
